Day 1

On arrival at Maun airport transfer to light aircraft charter flight and fly to Camp Okuti for 3 nights. Camp Okuti is a small camp catering for a maximum of twenty guests who are all accommodated in insect-proofed thatched chalets with en suite bathrooms. Each chalet faces west and overlooks one of the Delta’s many spectacular lagoons. At Camp Okuti, discover the treasure trove of wildlife that is Moremi Game Reserve.

Day 2

Activities at Camp Okuti. The camp offers a choice of two game viewing activities per day. Game drives are in open safari vehicles allowing you to go to areas where an abundance of large mammals can be found. Powerboat excursions are towards the upper delta where, during breeding season, large concentrations of herons and storks may be seen.

Day 3

Activities at Camp Okuti.

Day 4

Depart Camp Okuti by charter flight for Maun airport where you will be met and transferred by air (25 minute flight) to Shinde Private concession camp for 3 nights to experience the Footsteps for Young Explorers Safari. On arrival at lunchtime, you will be briefed on activities and safety during your stay. Your first lesson that afternoon will be in Bush Craft and you will take a short walk to become familiar with the African Bush. Discuss lessons of the day around the evening campfire.

Day 5

Get up before sunrise and have a light breakfast before heading off into the bush. Following the water’s edge examine the tracks left by overnight visitors as well as identifying some of the animals, birds and insects that inhabit the forests.

Campfire lunch followed by a rest during which time the Young Explorers record the morning’s observations and discoveries in their Bush Journals and learn some traditional bush skills such as basket weaving or carving.

Mid-afternoon, set off in a mokoro (a dugout canoe) and let your guides teach you some of the ways it is possible to survive in the wilderness, as well as keeping an eye out for animals and birds. Spend part of the evening before dinner in the bush kitchen and learn how the fare is produced on the fire and fresh bread and cakes in the bush oven.

Day 6

Set off early (again before sunrise) in 4×4 vehicles on a game drive and look out for wild dog, elephant, lion, buffalo, cheetah, wildebeest and impala. During the afternoon, the Young Explorers will learn how to handle a rifle safely and shoot the pellet gun on the bush range.

Later, the Young Explorers can test their angling skills, either along the banks of the lagoons and channels or from the mokoro. They will learn how to catch, handle and release a fish correctly – although a couple may be retained for dinner!

After the final dinner there will be a further opportunity to explore around the camp and identify much of the wildlife that wakes up as the sun sets.

Day 7

This morning the guides will give you an informal bush evaluation and the Young Explorers will be awarded their Okavango Delta Certificate and shirt. You will then transfer by light aircraft to Gunns Camp for 4 nights.

Gunns Camp, in the Okavango Delta, overlooking the legendary Chiefs Island and bordering the Moremi Game Reserve, is one of the last few remaining old-style safari camps. Set under leafy palms and African Ebony it blends naturally with its unique environs and offers comfort balanced by rustic simplicity. All accommodation is en-suite and there are seven spacious tents and a thatched chalet.

Day 8

Activities in Gunns Camp, to include mokoro (canoeing in traditional dug out canoes), powerboat excursions, guided game walks with experienced guides who have a wide knowledge and understanding of the complex ecosystem of the Okavango Delta and sunset boating excursions. Activities are dependent on water levels and may be restricted between January and May.
