South Africa – Cape Town, Battlefields and Wildlife : 14 days

Day 1

On arrival at Cape Town International Airport, you will be met and transferred to the 4* Portswood Hotel on the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront where you will stay for the next 3 nights.

Day 2

After breakfast your guide will collect you from your hotel for a half day City and Table Mountain Tour. Start by driving past the cultural history museum, St George’s Cathedral, the Company Gardens and the South African Museum to the Tower cableway station for the ascent of Table Mountain. If the weather conditions are unfavourable to use the cable car, you will enjoy a scenic drive up Signal Hill to view the panorama of the city below. Return to Cape Town via Tamboerskloof, the Flower Market, the Malay quarter and the Castle.

Afternoon at leisure to explore the Waterfront and surrounding areas.

Day 3

This morning, you will be collected by your guide for a full day Peninsula Tour. Depart for the Cape of Good Hope along one of South Africa’s most scenic routes. Drive through Sea Point, visit Hout Bay and continue through Constantia Nek to Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens. Kirstenbosch was established as a centre for the preservation and study of the indigenous flora of Southern Africa. Enjoy lunch in Kalk Bay and then travel through the historic Simon’s Town visiting the penguin colony at Boulders Beach and continuing to Cape Point. Return to Cape Town via Chapman’s Peak.

Day 4

This morning, you will be transferred to the Winelands area of Franschhoek where you will stay at La Fontaine Guest House for the next 2 nights. La Fontaine Guest House is centrally situated in the historic village of Franschhoek within walking distance of shops, galleries and restaurants. The hotel has beautiful mountain views and is set in peaceful garden surroundings and with a swimming pool. Breakfast is served in a charming courtyard, or in the dining room. Wine tastings, horse riding, trout fishing and golf can be organised.

Day 5

Full day Winelands Tour during which you will visit 4 to 5 wine estates.

Day 6

This morning, you will be collected from La Fontaine and transferred to Cape Town Airport where you check in for your flight to Durban. On arrival in Durban collect your rental car. Drive to the Battlefields area and the Babanango Valley Lodge where you will stay for 3 nights (It is about a 3 hour drive).

The Babanango Valley Lodge is situated on an 8,000-acre Natural Heritage Site and Private Nature Reserve of outstanding scenic beauty, surrounded by mountains with magnificent views down the valley. There is a large diversity of animals, birds, trees and wildflowers. Over 20 km of self-guided trails have been established to enable guests to explore and savour the spectacular scenery. Bedrooms are all ensuite and there is a lovely swimming pool.

Day 7

The Battlefield of Isandlwana & Rorkes Drift Tour (c. 7 hours/180 km): Follow the line of advance of the Zulus towards Isandlwana stopping at various places along the way. At Isandlwana, the battle is graphically described after which there is time to walk around the battlefield to take in the atmosphere. A picnic lunch is usually taken in the shade of the trees at Rorke’s Drift before walking around the battlefield and seeing different perspectives while the Battle is described. Visit the memorials and the excellent museum before returning to Babanango Valley Lodge.

Day 8

Zulu Heritage Tour

This is a community project where 7 families from a neighbouring community participate and benefit directly in proportion to the programmes presented. The culture of the Zulus is demonstrated in the Lodge’s Cultural Village. This gives the visitor the opportunity to discuss matters such as the construction & layout of the homestead, customs, etiquette, food preparation, diviners and herbalists. This is a unique opportunity to visit a modern rural Zulu homestead.

Day 9

Drive back to Durban Airport, return your rental car and check in for your flight to Johannesburg. On arrival transfer by shuttle to the Birchwood Hotel for overnight.

Day 10

Transfer back to the airport in time for your flight to the Kruger Mpumulanga International Airport. On arrival you will be met and transferred to Rhino Post Safari Lodge for the next 2 nights. Game activities are included.

Day 11

Rhino Post Safari Lodge is located in 12 000 hectares of pristine bushveld in the only official wilderness concession awarded in the Kruger National Park. The environmentally sensitive concession is largely unexplored, with a huge diversity of both fauna and flora. Set on the banks of the Mutlumuvi Riverbed on the Southern end of the concession, the elegant 8 suite (16 bed) Lodge is built using natural materials of stone, wood, thatch and canvas.

A typical day starts with a cup of fresh coffee or tea followed by a 3-hr game drive in a 4 x 4 landcruiser with a professional guide. Back at the lodge guests enjoy a leisurely brunch and then relax around the pool overlooking the waterhole. In the afternoon after high tea, you can enjoy an evening game drive, winding down with sundowners, watching an African sunset and spotting nocturnal animals in the Park.

Day 12

After your early morning game activity and leisurely breakfast, you will be collected and transferred to Notten’s Bush Camp for the next two nights. Game activities are included.

Day 13

Notten’s Bush Camp is part of the Sabi-Sands Game Reserve which adjoins the south western side of the Kruger National Park in the Eastern Transvaal Lowveld. This exclusive camp is situated under a canopy of indigenous riverine trees e.g. African Ebony and Marulas (leadwoods). Six chalets accommodate a maximum of 12 guests at a time.

There are early morning and evening game drives in an open Land Rover, and Bush walks with an armed game ranger knowledgeable in all aspects of conservation, ecology and the environment.

Day 14

Transfer to KMIA Airport in time for your flight back to Johannesburg and onwards to the UK.
