India and Nepal – The Buddhist Trail : 15 days

Day 1 Delhi

On arrival in Delhi you will be met and transferred to your hotel. Two nights Claridges Hotel.

Day 2 Delhi

Full day sightseeing in Delhi to include Chandni Chowk and the Red Fort.

Day 3 Delhi / Bhopal

Morning transfer to the railway station for the train journey to Bhopal. Afternoon sightseeing in Bhopal includes the Birla Mandir, the Archaeological Museum, and the Laxmi Narayan Temple.

Overnight Noor- us- Sabah Palace.

Day 4 Bhopal / Agra

Morning excursion to Sanchi. The Sanchi Stupa 48 kms from Bhopal is a World Heritage monument and one of the world’s most important Buddhist pilgrim centres. The four gateways of the Stupa are exquisitely carved and recount the life of Gautam Buddha. Later in the afternoon transfer to the railway station for the train journey to Agra. Overnight at the Trident Hotel.

Day 5 Agra / Bodhgaya

Morning visit to the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort. Afternoon excursion to Fatehpur Sikri. Later in the evening transfer to the railway station for the overnight train journey to Gaya.

Day 6 Bodhgaya

Upon arrival, transfer from Gaya to Bodhgaya. Bodhgaya is a major centre for Buddhist pilgrims. The focal point is the Mahabodi Temple – the Bo Tree growing here is said to be a direct descendant of the original tree under which Buddha sat, meditated and achieved enlightenment. Afternoon visit to the temple and monasteries. Two nights Nikko Hotel.

Day 7 Bodhgaya

Full day excursion to Nalanda and Rajgir. In Nalanda, visit the university and the great stupa. Rajgir is an important Buddhist pilgrimage site as Buddha spent 12 years here, and the first Buddhist council after Buddha attained nirvana was held here.

Day 8 Bodhgaya / Varanasi

Drive to Varanasi (240km- 6hrs). It was at nearby Samath that Buddha preached his first sermon.

Two nights Radisson Hotel.

Day 9 Varanasi

Morning sightseeing in Varanasi including a boat trip on the river. Afternoon visit to Samath and its fine museum.

Day 10 Varanasi / Kushinagar

Drive to Kushinagar (280kms – 6 hrs). Rest of the day at leisure. Two nights Lotus Nikko Hotel.

Day 11 Kushinagar

Full day sightseeing of the city. Visit the remains of Buddha’s cremation stupa, the large reclining Buddha figure in the Mahaparivana Temple and monasteries.

Day 12 Kushinagar / Kathmandu

Drive to the Nepal border where you will be met and transferred to Kathmandu (380kms – 8 hrs).

Three nights Mountain Hotel.

Day 13 Kathmandu

Full day sightseeing including Patan, Durbar Square, and Swayambunath. Durbar Square is the spiritual and cultural heart of Kathmandu and comprises three large squares containing more than 50 temples and monuments. The Swayambhunath Stupa is revered as the oldest and one of the two most important sites of Buddhist worship in Kathmandu. In the afternoon visit Patan, the architectural and artistic centre of the Kathmandu Valley.

Day 14 Kathmandu

Day at leisure to explore the Kathmandu Valley.

Day 15 Leave Kathmandu

Transfer to the airport for your return flight to the UK.
