India – Tigers and Taj! : 16 days
Day1
Depart London Heathrow on your overnight flight to Delhi.
Day 2 Delhi
On arrival in Delhi you will be met and transferred to Claridges Hotel for overnight. In the afternoon enjoy a sightseeing tour of Delhi’s major sights.
Day 3 Delhi – Samode
Drive from Delhi to Samode (about 6-7 hours). Two nights at the Samode Palace.
Places of interest include Samode Palace, Samode Fort and excursions to Shekhawati village.
Day 4 Samode – Jaipur – Samode
In the morning enjoy an excursion to Amber Fort which is reached on elephant back, and in the afternoon take a sightseeing tour of the ‘pink city’. Here you will see the Hawa Mahal (Palace of Winds), which remains only a façade today, and the Jantar Mantar (Observatory).
Day 5 Samode – Ranthambhore
Drive from Samode to Ranthambhore (about 4 ½ hours). Three nights at Sher Bagh (luxury tented camp).
Days 6 and 7 Ranthambore
Rich with wildlife such as the panther, jackal, hyena and a huge variety of birds, the most famous resident is the endangered tiger. The Park became a Project Tiger Reserve in 1973. Also visit Ranthambore Fort from which the park derives its name. More than 1000 years old, it stands at a height of 215m.
Day 8 Ranthambore – Bharatpur
Drive from Ranthambore to Bharatpur on the eastern edge of Rajasthan (4-5 hrs). Overnight at the Laxmi Niwas Palace. Visit the Keoladeo Bird Sanctuary which attracts over 375 species including egrets, darter cormorants and storks.
Day 9 Bharatpur – Agra
Second early morning visit to the Bharatpur bird sanctuary. Later drive to Agra (about 1 ½ hours) visiting the deserted Mughal city of Fatehpur Sikri enroute. Visit the Taj Mahal built by Emperor Shah Jahan in 1630AD in memory of his favourite wife. Overnight Taj View Hotel.
Day 10 Agra – Jhansi – Khajuraho
Visit the Taj Mahal at sunrise. You will then be transferred to Agra railway station to board the Shatabdi Express train to Jhansi. You will be met on arrival and driven to Khajuraho (about 4 ½ hours drive). Overnight Taj Chandela.
Day 11 Khajuraho – Bandhavgarh
In the morning visit the Chandela Dynasty Temples, famous for their sensuous and erotic sculptures. Later drive to Bandhavgarh (about 5 hours). Three nights at Tiger Trails Resort, close to the Bandhavgarh National Park. Bandhavgarh National Park is in the Vindhya hills of Madhya Pradesh, and has a large natural fort at its centre. Before becoming a National Park in 1968, it was the game preserve of the Maharajas of Rewa where the White Tiger originated. The main wildlife includes tiger, leopard, sloth bear, gaur and wild pigs. There are also interesting cave shrines scattered around the park.
Days 12-13 Bandhavgarh
Morning & afternoon game drives by jeep/elephant.
Day 14 Bandhavgarh – Katni – Delhi
Morning game drive by jeep/elephant. Later you will be transferred to Katni railway station to board the overnight Maha Kaushal Express train to Delhi.
Day 15 Delhi
On arrival in Delhi you will be met and transferred to Claridges Hotel for overnight.
Day 16
Transfer to Delhi International Airport in time for your return flight to the UK.
