Alaska and Western Canada : 23 days

Day 1

Depart London on your flight to Vancouver.

Day 2

At leisure with family and friends.

Day 3

Depart Vancouver Airport for your flight to Anchorage. On arrival transfer to your hotel for two nights.

Day 4

At leisure in Anchorage.

Day 5

Depart from the railway station on the Midnight Sun Express for Denali National Park. On arrival you will be transferred to the Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge for overnight. Denali National Park encompasses an amazing six million acres and is the size of the state of Massachusetts. Home to Mt. McKinley, North America’s highest peak at 20,320 feet, the Park hosts an array of wildlife – from moose, caribou, Dall sheep and grizzly bears to grey wolves and red foxes.

Day 6

The morning is yours to explore the Denali National Park. In the late afternoon the train departs for Fairbanks. On arrival make your way to your hotel for overnight. Fairbanks, located in the hub of Alaska’s interior and close to the Arctic, is the closest city to Denali National Park, a scenic 120 mile (180 kilometers) drive or four-hour train ride.

Day 7

Travel by bus to Dawson City .3 nights  Bed and Breakfast .

Days 8 – 9

At leisure in Dawson City. Perhaps try gold panning!

Day 10

Depart by bus for Whitehorse for overnight.

Day 11

Depart on the White Pass and Yukon Route by bus to Fraser, and then train to Skagway, Alaska. Depart Skagway on the Alaska Marine Highways ferry system  for Sitka. Overnight is spent on board.

Day 12

Two nights the Sitka Hotel. Sitka’s setting, in a tranquil bay on Baranof Island, is spectacular. Tiny islands dense with evergreen trees dot the blue-green water, which is crisscrossed by dozens of fishing boats.

Looming over the town and waterfront is Mount Edgecumbe, a Mount Fuji look-alike located on a nearby island. Sitka also has a rich legacy of artifacts and traditions from the Alaskan Native, Russian and early-U.S. eras. It is the ancestral home of the Tlingit people. Sitka also has an abundance of wildlife. Humpback whales frolic in the bay. Massive brown bears and Sitka black-tailed deer roam through nearby forests of Sitka spruce and hemlock. Thousands of seabirds, including the rare rhinoceros auklet and tufted puffin, flock to St. Lazaria National Wildlife Refuge at the mouth of Sitka Sound.

Day 13

At leisure.

Day 14

Depart Sitka  for the overnight crossing to Juneau.

Day 15

Arrival at Juneau. Rest of the day at leisure.

Day 16

Depart Juneau  for Prince Rupert, Canada. Overnight on board.

Day 17

At leisure in Prince Rupert. Overnight.

Day 18

Early departure from Prince Rupert on the Skeena Train. Overnight Prince George.

Day 19

Continue by Skeena Train to Jasper. Overnight at the Marmot Inn. Located in the middle of Jasper National Park in Alberta’s Rocky Mountains, Jasper’s friendly mountain hospitality, peaceful low-key atmosphere and the promise of adventure will make any visit unforgettable.

Day 20

Travel to Banff along one of the most scenic drives in North America – the Icefields Parkway. This is home for Black and Grizzly bears, elk, moose, mountain goats and sheep. Visit the Columbia Icefield, a series of glaciers 325 square kilometres in area, where time is available for an Ice Explorer Ride (Snocoach) onto the surface of the Athabasca Glacier. Three nights.

Days 21 -22

At leisure.

The town of Banff is at the centre of Banff National Park, Canada’s first national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Canadian Rockies. The park is a year-round protected wilderness area offering rugged alpine beauty and first-class amenities. In summer, walk along nature trails, hike into the backcountry or climb peaks made famous by earlier tourist-explorers, or you can golf, camp, tour glaciers, river raft, cycle or fish. Year round pursuits include visiting National Historical Sites, enjoying the Banff Centre for the Arts, touring museums, riding sightseeing gondolas, and bathing at the Banff Upper Hot Springs.

Day 23

Transfer to Calgary Airport for your return flight to the UK.
