Day 1 Arrival in Halifax, Nova Scotia
Arrival at Halifax airport. Pick up your rental car and transfer to your hotel. Afternoon at leisure.
Overnight in Halifax.
Day 2 Halifax
Morning sightseeing in Halifax touring the Metro area, the largest urban centre of Atlantic Canada. Take in the historic waterfront, where harbour tours and deep sea fishing charters are available, and visit the Halifax Citadel, watching the Scottish influence as the kilted soldiers perform their parade drill to the sound of bagpipe music. Afternoon at leisure. Overnight in Halifax.
Day 3 Halifax – Cape Breton
Early departure for rugged Cape Breton Island. This afternoon an optional visit to the fortress of Louisbourg, the largest historical reconstruction in North America. Find looming walls and massive gates, quaint homes and formal gardens, comfortable inns and noisy taverns; a living, working community. Continue to Sydney, a fishing village on the coast, for overnight.
Day 4 Cape Breton – Cabot Trail – Baddeck
This morning depart for the famous Cabot Trail. This 184 mile long loop has been described as the most spectacular drive in North America. The Cabot Trail winds through the Cape Breton Highlands, climbs 500 metre high capes, skirts rugged coastal headlands and passes through villages where ancient dialects can still be heard. Stop to visit local craft shops. Continue to Baddeck for overnight.
Day 5 Baddeck – Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island
Today depart to Caribou and board the ferry crossing the Northumberland Strait to Wood Island in Canada’s smallest province, Prince Edward Island. This is the land of “Anne of Green Gables” and fabulous lobster suppers. Two nights Charlottetown. An orientation tour upon arrival will show us the highlights of the city. Afternoon at leisure to explore this charming town.
Day 6 Prince Edward Island
Travel to Cavendish Beach and along the coastal route through PEI National Park viewing sand dunes, sandstone cliffs, salt marshes and freshwater ponds as well as some of the finest beaches in Canada. Visit the Anne of Green Gables Museum, the Kensington Gardens and Woodleigh Replicas. Return to Charlottetown for overnight.
Day 7 Charlottetown – Moncton, New Brunswick
Travel across the Confederation Bridge from Borden to Cape Tormentine in New Brunswick on the mainland of Canada. Continue off the beaten path along rugged coastlines passing tide-carved shores, rock formations and the invigorating waters of the Bay of Fundy. Walk on the ocean floor at Hopewell Cape (depending on tides) and view the famous “Flower Pot Rocks” sculpted by the mighty Fundy Tides. Continue to Moncton for overnight.
Day 8 Moncton – Caraquet
A morning tour of Moncton and a visit to world-famous Magnetic Hill, which appears to defy gravity, before taking the scenic route through Buctouche, an Acadian fishing village. Continue along the coast passing the Kouchibouquac National Park, the largest park in New Brunswick with forests, salt marshes, sensational beaches with warm salt water and sand dunes. Stop to visit the Acadian Historical Village where you can learn of the Acadian life as it was from 1780 to the early 1900′s. Overnight in Caraquet.
Day 9 Caraquet – St.Andrews-by-the-Sea
Today the drive will take you through the heartland of New Brunswick. Afternoon visit to the capital Fredericton, then continue to the coastal resort town of St. Andrews-by-the-Sea for a two night stay at the Algonquin Resort. This historic hotel has opened for visitors every summer for over 100 years. From tennis to golf, sunbathing to whale watching, the attentive hotel staff cater to your every need. This is one of the great resorts of the Maritimes.
Day 10 St.Andrews-by-the-Sea
A morning whale watching tour to the feeding ground of the unique and almost extinct mammal, the Right Whale. The Bay of Fundy has a galaxy of over 20 species of whales including Minkes, Finbacks and Humpbacks. The afternoon is at leisure to enjoy the Resort and the town, plan a game of golf or tennis, take a walk into the village or do some shopping.
Day 11 St.Andrews-by-the-Sea – Digby
A morning drive to Saint John just 110 km east of St.Andrews, where sightseeing of Canada’s oldest incorporated city will include viewing the famous Reversing Falls Rapids, the Martomello Tower, the Old City Market and the historic Trinity area. In the afternoon continue by ferry across the Bay of Fundy for overnight in Digby, Nova Scotia.
Day 12 Digby – Mahone Bay
Cross southwestern Nova Scotia via the Kejimkujik Scenic Drive which takes you through the Kejimkujik National Park, a wilderness preserve of forest, lakes and streams. Join the Lighthouse Trail at Liverpool, a town with history dating back to the 1700s, and take a tour to Western Head scenic point and lighthouse for views over Liverpool Bay and Coffin Island Light. Continue to Bridgewater for overnight.
Day 13 Mahone Bay – Halifax airport
The scenic Lighthouse Trail continues as you wind your way through Lunenburg and little villages to Peggy’s Cove, a rugged fishing village dominated by a famous lighthouse that houses a post office. The village is a photographer’s delight. Continue towards Halifax. Return your rental car at the airport before checking in for the return flight home.
